Description

What if having a mom was all you ever wanted yet the only thing you couldn't have? When her father married beautiful and sophisticated Jade, five-year-old Katie couldn’t have been happier. The union of their blended family meant four siblings, a bigger house, extravagant holidays and most of all, a mother she had only dreamed of. Once the novelty wore off, however, Katie found herself in a toxic environment she couldn’t escape. Like “Mommie Dearest,” she suffered decades of torment, manipulation and abuse. Now, for the first time, Kathryn's story reveals the deepest, darkest secrets of her childhood. This is the inspirational story of how she finally broke free. From growing up in the “paradise” that is Panama City, Florida, to her travels all over the country and around the world, Kathryn’s journey is proof there is redemption, a light at the end of the tunnel, hope and happiness available to each of us.

A very, very close and special friend of mine said I should read this book. Though it's not typically what I read, she knows me well enough that I took her at her word. It's not a long book, but the title is intriguing, like a mystery that the book would solve.I bought it, it arrived, and it took me a week or so to start reading it, as I am consumed by the daily pressures of my life. I should have started right away. There are many books that talk of life experience, hardships, and joy, but I can truly say nothing can compare to this. The author, Kathryn Olson, gives a naked account of her childhood, the severe emotional and physical abuse at the hands of those she loved, of those she hoped loved her. It's profoundly tragic, but at the same time, so healing for her to get these words out, you can only feel joy for her.I have a bad tendency to write too much, especially for a book review, so I'll try to wrap up. In this book I saw so very many parallels to my life, that reading it helped me more than she could know. Even if your life has always been good and happy, even if you've had nothing but unqualified love from your family, there is still so much to learn from her words. I really believe this is a book everyone should read, both for life lessons and, importantly, for the sheer joy of seeing how the author overcame. I know I'll never forget this read.
