Description

Mark Twain is best known for his novels and short stories. Twain uses his incredible whit to depict life in America. His books Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn have been read by school children for generations. His life on the Mississippi River has peeked the imagination of boys to go and build a raft and sail off into unknown adventures. An excerpt from the humorous account reads," My father was a St. Bernard, my mother was a collie, but I am a Presbyterian. This is what my mother told me, I do not know these nice distinctions myself. To me they are only fine large words meaning nothing. My mother had a fondness for such; she liked to say them, and see other dogs look surprised and envious, as wondering how she got so much education. But, indeed, it was not real education; it was only show: she got the words by listening in the dining-room and drawing-room when there was company, and by going with the children to Sunday-school and listening there; and whenever she heard a large word she said it over to herself many times, and so was able to keep it until there was a dogmatic gathering in the neighborhood, then she would get it off, and surprise and distress them all, from pocket-pup to mastiff, which rewarded her for all her trouble."

This story isn't quite what I expected. It was sad. I was hoping it would be an uplifting inspirational story with a happy ending. I liked the characters except for the father and the lab rats. I didn't enjoy the ending AT ALL. It was too realistic for my taste. Animals deserve better than this kind of treatment. I wasn't at all impressed by the plot of this story. I loved the dogs and family members - but could have done without the grisley end. It seemed to me there were also several run on sentences throughout the narrative. I think Twain could have done better with this one - hence one star. One star represents the characters who were likable.
