Description

2013 album from the veteran British Alt-Rock band. with Between Dog & Wolf, New Model Army celebrate 30 years of releasing music this year with what the critics are calling their best ever album. Mixed by Joe Barresi (Queens of the Stone Age, Soundgarden, Tool, Bad Religion) in L.A. The album sounds distinctly different to any previous NMA album, with comparisons to Nick Cave, PJ Harvey, Peter Gabriel and Pink Floyd. The album features stunning artwork from longtime collaborator Joolz.

It seems that I was a little hasty with my initial review of this album! To begin, after my initial disappointment I just pushed it off to the side and did not bother to listen to it for a couple of weeks but then one day when I had absolutely nothing to do I pulled out my Bose headset that I normally only use for noise canceling when I try to go to sleep I found my audio cable and started listening to this album just one song at a time it was then that I realized this album does not keep its secrets up easily it is like looking at someone who drives a Saab instead of a more mainstream choice of car like a BMW or a Honda etc. you have to look hard for what makes that Saab so wonderful but if you look it's there. the first song on dog and Wolf that clicked for me was did you make it safe and then I realized that Justin is still a master crafter. I then got to track number PULL the sun this is another song that when it finally clicks you cannot stop playing it over and over again lean back and fall had a very similar effect on me. Knievel is another one that reaches into your chest and touches you in a spot that you thought was closed forever. Lean back and fall in a way this song almost reminds me of another misunderstood album that the Fixx recorded on or around 1998 called elemental it almost pleads with you currently I am working on understanding the song ghosts. This album is one that you don't pull it out of the package put it in the player and fall instantly in love with it the way that I did with most of the other albums in their catalog, but that doesn't make it any less good just more complex and eventually almost more satisfying in the end. I am sorry that I misjudged it terribly I guess that's what I get for becoming a lazy middle-aged American! I had forgotten that I was an 18-year-old college student when I started listening to New Model Army the angry teenager still inside me but it is been dulled by 20 years of working in a corporate environment. It is great to know that he is still inside of me!
