Anyone who has ever wanted or had a dog should enjoy this one. I first came across it in middle age and liked it, and more recently read through it with one of my students. It had not lost any of its appeal as I grew older. It is not an action-packed story, and not what you would call a thrilling story, but, well-planned and well-written, with a touch or two of humor and some scenes that bring out the emotions, it deserves to be called a classic.
