Description

An interesting confrontation of traditional fugues of J.S. Bach with 15 new fugues. All the new fugues are dedicated explicitly to the Aurelia Saxophone Quartet and are world premiere recordings. The well-established Aurelia Saxophone Quartet (founded in the year 1982) has toured worldwide. This is a double SACD recording in brilliant sonics

Bach's Art of Fugue is a curious work. Left unfinished at the composer's death, he didn't even specify instruments. Unlike most period authentic performances of the Art of Fugue that try to assign an instrumentation Bach might have picked, this recording features the unusual but successful choice of saxophone quartet. The music remains timeless Bach, and is well suited to the quartet's sound. It is a recording I come back to again and again. Something about these fugues is just sublime! The second disc is series of more contemporary sax quartet pieces which all address the fugue in some way, a sort of dialogue between these composers and Bach. They are interesting and employ various extended techniques but may not appeal to some whose tastes are more strictly classical. Certainly it is almost as if there are two albums with separate concepts here, it might be interesting to put it on shuffle and hear the Bach mixed in with the others.
