I read this Weekly Reader book in the 1970s. This story about finding the beauty and value within remains vividly with me to this day.The story follows Algernon, a bulldog who believes he is quite ugly and inferior. He seeks help from from other dogs, but fails to learn beauty from the poodle, speed from the greyhound, or tracking from the beagle.He is in despair when one day his beloved owner, a little girl, wanders into a bull's pasture. The angry bull charges her, but Algernon's instincts take over. He clamps down onto the bull's nose and discovers that his ugly squashed nose allows him to still breathe, and his stout body allows him to be tossed about, and his underbite locks his jaws until the bull submits. The mightly bull tires and meekly surrenders, leaving Algernon proud and confident in his inner worth.This is a wonderful metaphore about not judging others by their outward appearance, and discovering your own hidden talents.
